Your keyboard is one of the most used tools in your daily routine – whether you’re working, gaming, or just browsing. Over time, crumbs, dust, and finger oils build up, making it look dirty and potentially shortening the lifespan of your switches. A little regular care not only keeps your keyboard looking fresh but also ensures smooth, responsive typing for years to come.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to safely clean your UVI mechanical keyboard – from quick weekly touch-ups to a full deep clean.
If this is your first time cleaning a keyboard, check out our Beginner’s Keyboard Cleaning FAQ. It covers all the basics and extra tips.
But no matter which method you use, always start here:
• Wired: disconnect the USB cable
• Wireless: switch it off and remove the batteries
• Laptop: shut down and unplug the charger
• Compressed air can (or a hair dryer on cool)
• Microfiber cloth for fingerprints and grease
• Cotton swabs for the tight spaces
• Isopropyl alcohol (70%) or mild soap solution
• Soft brush or old toothbrush
• Makeup/artist brush for delicate RGB keycaps
• Keycap puller (optional, but handy for deep cleaning)
This routine takes less than 5 minutes:
1. Shake it out – flip the keyboard upside down and gently shake to remove crumbs.
2. Blast dust away – use short bursts of compressed air between keys.
3. Wipe it down – dampen a microfiber cloth with water or alcohol and wipe key tops and case.
4. Detail clean – use cotton swabs dipped in alcohol for stubborn spots between keys.
⚠️ Pro tip: Avoid harsh cleaners – they can damage your keycaps.
If your keyboard needs a reset, here’s how to deep clean it:
1. Take a reference photo – so you’ll know where every key goes.
2. Remove the keycaps – gently with a keycap puller. Be careful with large keys and switches.
3. Wash the keycaps – soak in warm soapy water for 1 hour, rinse, and let dry for at least 24 hours.
4. Clean the case – blow out dust, brush around switches, and wipe with alcohol swabs.
5. Reassemble – follow your photo and press the keycaps back until they click into place.
💡 Note: For laptops, we don’t recommend removing keycaps
Accidents happen. Here’s what to do immediately:
1. Unplug the keyboard right away.
2. Turn it upside down so liquid can drain.
3. Blot with a dry cloth and let it dry for 24–48 hours.
4. Never use a hair dryer (heat = damage).
5. If it was something sticky (like soda), you’ll need a full deep clean.
A few minutes of maintenance goes a long way. Quick weekly cleanings prevent buildup, while a deep clean every few months will keep your keyboard feeling brand new. Treat it well, and it will keep up with you – game after game, keystroke after keystroke.
